This week's lesson focused on how do we take an existing sports game and turn it into a board game. We originally had chosen NASCAR racing because, it was a simple idea of going around one track with 5 laps. This eventually didn't work out as there wasn't any realistic ideas of pit stops or traps to be added on to the game board. It was too complex and overall not the best idea for the specific rules we were given. We eventually had landed upon reimagining a game of basketball. Now when we were thinking of how to make basketball into a board game our biggest idea was traversal and passing. In basketball there's a sense of who, how, and when you pass the ball. We realized quickly enough that we would need 2 dices that can help with moving and passing. This would level the playing field for people to determine what they want to do when in possession of the ball. At around the 11 minute mark on the Ted talk video Bennet Foddy began to describe how video games and sports differ on each other when playing. He says with video games you always get a chance to redo your mistake by restarting the match or challenge. He says this is pervasive and In a way unethical. Now although I don't agree he's trying to make a point. The point being that in real time sports there's no rewind or restart button on the scoring. This elevates the tension and competitiveness within the players. Our board game did exactly that. Having the players identify who they want to move. It was best describes as being very strategic. More so in vain of like playing chess. You have a chance to pass but, will you take that risk or keep it moving?

I’d be interested in knowing more about your perspective on “re-doing” action in games vs what’s possible in competition.
