Devlog Journal 5

This week's lesson covered two things. One with dealing card games and learning the origins of it. The second is where we take an existing sports game and convert it into a playable board game. The card game we played today was a bit complex, but pretty fast. Looking at the quote "a card is just that, which may or may not have undergone any modifications" it signifies the clear emphasis of what we learned this week in card games. A card is a card, but it can go further depending on the type of game. For instance the game we played today dealt with Asian food on the cards that symbolized a certain amount of points. Your objective at the end of the game is to have the most points and you will be crowned victor. This game shows us throughout that there isn't any specific way to play, but rather suggest to the player that they can mix and match however they want. Our earlier lesson in the week focused on our board games and with the quote “...the basic elements that make up games, the tools we have to design play experiences, the incredible range of play types, not to mention the things videogames ask of players" was a huge play in finalizing our board games rules. You always think to yourself that the idea is perfect and a few rounds may work out well, but it's different when it's someone coming in with a blank slate. They have no idea of what the game is because they need to learn it. If the instructions aren't clear then they won't be able to understand what to do. The biggest aspect though was the collaborative process. A quote that highlighted this lesson was "...techniques for resolving differences and conflicts among team members…". We didn't necessarily have any conflicting ideas which was nice, but you did have to learn what was the best option to implement and how to tell someone that one idea would work better than the other.
